Acrylic, charcoal and epoxy resin on cotton canvas
Size: 100cm diameter
One of the 'Miss You' Collection. A series of paintings examining love and loss.
Story behind the artworks
In 2010, I lost my life partner of 20 years to an aggressive cancer that took him within 10 weeks of initial diagnosis. This experience and the 20 years prior acted as inspiration for the series of paintings and gave me an opportunity to express my feelings in a creative way for the first time.
The theme of ‘love and loss’ take the viewer from the initial heady days of first meeting, through the life journey to the final goodbye and grief when someone loses the person they have loved for the final time. It also reflects the need for everyone to express emotions, particularly during times of loss and grief.
The concept behind the circular canvases was to convey emotions, which we know are not linear in their nature, but follow a much more complex path.
Rather than be directed by the artist, the viewer is able to follow their own feelings to determine which emotion is represented by which painting on the love and loss continuum.
The use of acrylic, charcoal and epoxy resin provides an almost 3D effect, giving depth and insight into a particular emotion being felt at a given time. The strong use of colour in the works and circular strokes, using sponges and brushes, further emphasises the concept.
